Music/Composition
ONIKHO is an Oakland-based indie electronic artist and producer who began writing her debut EP after becoming paralyzed in a car accident in 2014. Her poetic lyrics, evocative vocals, and commanding melodies exhibits inspirations like Nina Simone and Sia. Her production style melds her influences of blues, jazz, and electronic soundscapes to create what she describes as “electro-cinematic soul”.
Originally a classically trained pianist, she found solace in music after her accident. Not strong enough to play with other artists after surgery, she taught herself how to produce music in Ableton and Logic. Her first EP boasts both hope and devastation as she navigated the challenges following her traumatic accident, and discovered acceptance of a future with a disability.
A New York native, ONIKHO’s interest in music began at age 4; however, it wasn’t until after her accident that she began writing and producing her own music. In addition to her recent release, she has received a Fulbright Fellowship, SCI Artist Innovator Award, and has featured her music videos in the San Francisco Dance Film Festival. As she emerges from the Oakland music scene she aims to make music that can both soothe your soul and make you dance.
