I am a composer of concert music and music for modern dance. My music is inspired by archetypal themes drawn from folk music and popular culture. Many of my compositions are based on ballads, where the narrative serves as the formal structure of the work and the original melody serves as the musical “DNA.” I reconstitute musical gestures to create intense, arresting music that is expressive and relevant to modern audiences. Over the past ten years, choreographers have become increasingly interested in working with my music. Writing music for the stage has fundamentally changed the way I compose and how I think about dramatic shape and its relationship to musical construction. Through these experiences, I have developed a distinct compositional identity that is dramatic and relevant. I have found the American folk repertoire, in particular, to contain rich, fertile material from which I can draw inspiration.
